Ariana jiggled the doorknob frantically, banging on the door. “You can’t do this! You have to let me out of here! Please!” she cried, her eyes darting to the growing flames in the room. She scanned the room quickly, looking for any means of escape. “No, no, no,” she muttered, banging on the door again. The flames advanced towards her, quickly moving closer as it engulfed the various furniture laying about. There was no way out and this was it. She was going to die and she’d die knowing he truly hated her.
The flames were upon her now and she screamed, feeling the flames lick away at her flesh. This was it now. Death was already beckoning to her and she surrendered easily, but suddenly, the unbearable heat vanished and the pain was gone. She opened her eyes hesitantly, wondering if she was dead. Her eyes grew wide in wonderment as she stared all around her. The flames were still there, eating away at the walls, but she was unharmed. Her brow furrowed and she thought of a clear path experimentally. Instantly, the fire in front of her was extinguished, showing her a charred, but clear path out. No longer was she powerless to her mother’s husband’s tortures. No, she could fight back now.
